“Summit Meeting in Iran Disrupted by Rebukes of Syria”

Roger AKL is a former Lebanese navy officer, former Assistant armed Forces Attaché at the Lebanese Embassy in Washington D.C., former Second in Command of the Lebanese Navy (1981- 1984) and former head of the Lebanese liaison bureau with the American forces in Lebanon (1983-1984), former chairman, CEO and director of the board of companies in the INTRA Investment group (1984-1990). Currently he is a writer in Middle Eastern affairs.

When the US, known as allied to Israel, the enemy of Syria, asks for the departure of Assad, it is strengthening his power, because the Syrians will protect the enemy of their enemy. When, in the same time, the Saudis and the emir of Qatar, as well as Turkey, finance, pay, arm and send fighters to help the opposition, they strengthen the popularity of Assad, because, first, the Syrians never forgot the Ottoman massacres and genocides, committed by the Turks against them and other Ottoman populations, second, they despise the theocratic autocrats of the Gulf they consider “savage Bedouins” and now they accuse them also to be traitors to the Arab and Palestinian causes.

The same has happened when the West and Israel menaced the Iranian regime. You want to get rid of them; you better act as if you loved Assad and Ahmadinejad.

As for Morsi, it was normal that he attacks Assad because he wants to replace him with be the Syrian Moslem Brothers, while the Saudis hope he will be replaced by the Salafis, all of them Moslem extremists. Are they better democrats than the Baath party? We will see; but in the meantime, the West is dining with the devil and it better use a very, very long spoon, especially that Russia, China and Iran are ready to go to war for their allies in Syria.

What do you think will happen then to Lebanon and Israel and all other Syrian neighbors? What will happen to the price of oil and the world recession? All these consequences are nothing compared to a possible nuclear war. Is the West really using a sufficiently long spoon?
