Evangelists beaten up in Udaipur

Jaipur: Two evangelists have been beaten up near Udaipur in Rajasthan for their alleged conversion activities.Evangelist Charlie John from Agra and evangelist VM George from Udaipur were severely beaten up by activists belonging to the Sangh Parivar near Udaipur on 26 August 2010.

Charlie John was on a tour in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.  When he reached Udaipur, VM George joined him. As they were proceeding to Banswara in Madhya Pradesh, they stopped at a village near Udaipur to have some refreshment. They also used the occasion to distribute some Christian literature.
A young man objected to their distribution and asked them to leave the place. As the evangelists were leaving, more anti-Christian people came and blocked their vehicle.   Sensing trouble, the evangelists proceeded on their journey without stopping. When they reached a place called Salampur, a large number of Hindutva activists, who were informed about the evangelists, stopped them. They attacked both Charlie and George, leaving them badly injured. They also damaged their vehicle and took away the literature.

On information, the local police arrived and took the evangelists to the police station. The police asked them to prepare an FIR against the miscreants. But the evangelists refused to do so saying, “We are followers of Christ and we do not have any complaint against these people.” The police then escorted them for some distance and thereafter the evangelists proceeded to Banswara.
