Esperance go through after Al-Merrikh stalemate

Former African champions Esperance booked their place at the mini-league stage of the Orange CAF Champions League after managing a one all draw against Al-Merrikh of Sudan in Omdurman on Saturday.

The stalemate ensured the 1994 African champions advanced 4-1 on aggregate after a 3-0 win from the first leg held in Tunis two weeks ago.

DR Congo-import Janvier Besala Bokungu inadvertently slammed the ball into his own net on the stroke of half time to give the Sudanese giants a lone lead.

However, their lead lasted for only seven minutes as midfielder Wajdi Bouazzi grabbed the crucial equalizer for the visitors.

It is the first time Esperance have reached the mini-league stage of the premier continental club championship since 2007.
